It Is Suitable For
· Those in Bali looking to replace lost kidney filtration function.
· Those who want to remove excess fluid and waste from the blood.
· Those who want to maintain safe electrolyte levels.
· Those who wish to manage chronic kidney disease.
· Those who wish to continue regular hemodialysis treatment.
What Is Hemodialysis?
Hemodialysis is a life-sustaining, extracorporeal treatment designed for patients with kidney failure, including chronic kidney disease (CKD) and certain cases of acute kidney injury (AKI). When the kidneys are no longer able to effectively remove metabolic waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the bloodstream, hemodialysis performs this function artificially using a dialysis machine and a dialyzer, often called an “artificial kidney.”
During treatment, blood is circulated outside the body through the dialyzer, which contains semipermeable membranes. These membranes allow waste products and excess electrolytes to move into a cleansing solution called dialysate, while purified blood is returned to the body. This process helps regulate potassium, sodium, bicarbonate, and fluid levels, and supports blood pressure control.
How It Works
During Hemodialysis, blood is accessed through a vascular access point, usually in the arm. Two sterile needles are inserted to allow blood to flow from the body to the dialysis machine. The blood then passes through a dialyzer (artificial kidney), where a semipermeable membrane removes toxins and excess fluids through diffusion and ultrafiltration.
The dialysis machine carefully regulates blood flow rate, filtration pressure, and fluid removal volume while continuously monitoring vital signs such as blood pressure. After filtration, the purified blood is returned to the body. A standard session typically lasts 4 to 5 hours, depending on the patient’s clinical condition and treatment prescription.
Hemodialysis Procedure
1. Consultation and medical assessment will be conducted.
2. Needles will be inserted into the arm.
3. Blood will be pumped through the dialyzer.
4. Waste and excess fluid will be filtered.
5. Cleaned blood will be returned to the body.
6. Blood pressure will be monitored, needles will be removed.
7. Post-care instructions will be provided.
Advantages and Limitations of Hemodialysis
<Advantages>
· Replaces essential kidney filtration function
· Removes toxins and metabolic waste
· Reduces excess body fluid
· Stabilizes electrolyte balance
· Helps control blood pressure
· Improves overall metabolic stability
<Limitations>
· This treatment does not cure kidney failure
FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between kidney dialysis and Hemodialysis?
A1: Kidney dialysis is a general term for treatments that replace kidney function, including both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis specifically refers to filtering the blood through a machine and dialyzer outside the body.
Q2: What is the most common side effect of Hemodialysis?
A2: The most common side effects include low blood pressure (hypotension), muscle cramps, nausea, and dizziness during or after treatment.
Q3: How long can a person stay on Hemodialysis?
A3: Hemodialysis can be a long-term, life-sustaining therapy, often required indefinitely until a kidney transplant is possible or other treatment options are available.
Q4: What is removed during Hemodialysis?
A4: Hemodialysis removes waste products, excess water, and certain electrolytes from the blood, helping maintain safe levels of potassium, sodium, and bicarbonate.
Q5: Can kidneys start working normally again after Hemodialysis?
A5: In most cases of chronic kidney failure, kidneys do not fully recover. Hemodialysis acts as a replacement for lost kidney function rather than a cure, though in some acute kidney injuries, partial recovery is possible.
